Two Delhi University girls alleged that a group of men harassed and followed them near North Campus before trying to pull them into their vehicle. An FIR has been filed.
Delhi University students stage a protest at North Campus on Thursday following allegations that two female students were harassed and followed near north campus.
Two Delhi University students, Adwaitsha and Medha (surnames withheld at their request), have alleged that they were harassed, verbally abused and followed by a group of men in a Safari near Hakikat Park in north Delhi’s Mukherjee Nagar area on Wednesday night. The women also alleged that the men tried to pull them inside the vehicle after they stopped to record the incident.
The incident reportedly took place at around 9.30 pm on September 23, near Hakikat Park in the North Campus area.
According to one of the students, the vehicle approached them near Hakikat Park and its occupants lowered the window and passed obscene comments at the two women. When the students objected to the remarks and asked the men to leave, the situation escalated.
The student said the men began hurling abusive and obscene language at them. She further alleged that the occupants told the two women to “sit inside the car” and continued abusing them.
SUV followed the students
The students then started leaving the spot, but the vehicle followed them. When they stopped and took out their phones to record the vehicle and its occupants, the SUV also stopped near them.
The student alleged that the men then attempted to pull them inside the vehicle. The situation changed after one of the women took out her phone, following which the men allegedly drove away from the spot.
Students approached multiple police stations
The students subsequently approached the police. In a video shared on social media, one of the women claimed that she and her friend had to visit multiple police stations before their complaint was registered. She alleged that they were initially told that the location did not fall under the jurisdiction of the police station they had approached.
The student also claimed that her friends managed to trace the vehicle’s location using information available to them and shared the details with the police.
Police trace vehicle, identify driver
Delhi Police later confirmed that a written complaint regarding an alleged eve-teasing incident near Hakikat Park was received during the intervening night of September 23 and 24.
According to police, the vehicle involved in the incident was traced to its registered owner. The accused was identified as Naman Choudhary, a student of the Faculty of Law, who was accompanied by two to three other people at the time of the incident.
FIR registered under BNS sections
An FIR, numbered 390/26, has been registered at Mukherjee Nagar police station under Sections 78 (stalking), 79 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and 3(5) (criminal act done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Police said further investigation is underway.
North Campus students hold protest
The alleged incident also triggered a student protest in North Campus on Thursday.
Students raised concerns over women’s safety in and around the university area and demanded action in the case.
Police said further action will follow as the investigation progresses.
