The way has now been cleared to bring fugitive diamond trader Nirav Modi to India. Nirav Modi has also lost his last case in the European Human Rights Court. After which the last legal hurdle left in the matter of bringing him to India i.e. extradition has also been removed.
According to documents accessed by News18, Nirav Modi had approached the European Court of Human Rights in April 2026 after all avenues of appeal in UK courts were closed.
Nirav Modi has not got any relief even from the European court, due to which he is now left with no legal option to oppose his extradition.
After the legal process is completely over, the UK government has started the process of handing over Nirav Modi to the Indian authorities. Now Nirav Modi can be brought to India any time.
Nirav Modi is lodged in London jail since 2019. CBI and ED are trying to extradite him in the Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam and money laundering case worth several thousand crores.

Didn’t get relief even from human rights court
Nirav Modi had approached the European Court of Human Rights in April 2026 after exhausting all legal options of appeal in UK courts.
However, the European court also refused to grant relief to Nirav Modi. After this decision, all his legal avenues to challenge extradition are now officially closed.
UK government started the process of sending it to India
After the legal process is completely over, the UK government has now come into action. According to sources, the British government has started the necessary formalities to hand over Nirav Modi to Indian investigative agencies.
Sources say that extradition formalities are in the final stages and he can be brought to India any time.
Nirav Modi is lodged in London jail since March 2019
Fugitive diamond trader Nirav Modi has been in the UK for the last seven years and is lodged in London’s HMP Wandsworth prison since March 2019.
While in jail, he was fighting a legal battle against extradition to India, in which he has now faced complete defeat.
Wanted in PNB scam and money laundering case
India’s leading investigative agencies, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED), were making sustained efforts for the extradition of Nirav Modi.
There are serious allegations against Nirav Modi of committing fraud of several thousand crores of rupees in collaboration with Punjab National Bank (PNB) and money laundering related to it, for which it is necessary to bring him to India for investigation.
What is the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR)?
What is ECHR: It is an international court located in Strasbourg, France. It hears cases of violation of the European Human Rights Convention.
Role in extradition: Often criminals appeal to the ECHR citing human rights after losing their cases in the UK courts. This was the last international legal shield that Nirav Modi had, which has now ended.
