Eligible employees and NPS subscribers can submit requests to opt for the UPS to nodal officers till the last date through the CRA system or via physical application.
UPS is an option under the NPS.
Unified Pension Scheme: Eligible central government employees have an option to switch from the National Pension Scheme (NPS) to the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS). According to an official notification, November 30 is the last date to opt for UPS.
“The last date for eligible employees and past retirees under NPS to opt for UPS is November 30, 2025,” the finance ministry said in a statement.
It added that eligible employees and NPS subscribers can submit requests to nodal officers till the last date through the Central Recordkeeping Agency (CRA) system or via physical application.
How To Switch From the NPS To The UPS?
As the deadline to exercise the option to switch to UPS approaches, NPS subscribers may:
1. Submit their UPS request online through the CRA system; or
2. Submit a duly filled physical application form to their respective Nodal Office on or before November 30, 2025.
“The Nodal Offices will process all requests in accordance with the prescribed procedure,” the ministry said.
Who Is Eligible To Opt For UPS?
The UPS was introduced as an option under the NPS starting April 1, 2025, for central government employees. It offers assured pension payouts and is available to the 23 lakh employees who joined the government after January 1, 2004, when the old pension scheme ended.
The UPS can be opted for by central government employees who are currently under the NPS, new recruits joining government service on or after April 1, 2025, eligible NPS retirees, and the legally wedded spouses of deceased NPS subscribers. To qualify for UPS benefits, an employee must complete at least 10 years of service, while full pension benefits require 25 years of service.
What Are The Benefits Under UPS?
Key benefits under UPS include the switch option, tax exemptions, resignation and compulsory retirement benefits and many more.
“All eligible employees and past retirees of the Central Government under NPS are urged to submit their UPS requests on time to avail these benefits,” the ministry added.
Can Govt Employees Go Back To NPS After Opting For UPS?
“By opting for UPS, employees retain the flexibility to switch back to NPS at a later date, should they choose to exercise it,” according to the finance ministry. It means employees who shift from NPS to UPS will still be allowed to switch back to NPS later if they want to.
The Government of India had notified the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) for eligible Central Government employees vide Notification F. No. FX-1/3/2024-PR dated January 24, 2025, for assured pension.
Under the Unified Pension Scheme, the assured payout will be calculated based on the last 12-month salary, months of qualified service, and retirement corpus.
Under the UPS, employees contribute 10 per cent of their basic salary and dearness allowance, while the government contributes 18.5 per cent. This is different from the old pension scheme, where employees received 50 per cent of their last basic pay as pension without contributions.
In September, the ministry had extended the deadline for central government employees to opt for the Unified Pension Scheme till November 30, 2025, from September 30 earlier.
