A Boston jury awarded Dr David Sabatini, a former star biology professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, $6 million in damages after finding that a former colleague defamed him with allegations of sexual misconduct. The decision marks a dramatic legal vindication for the scientist, whose career collapsed in 2021 following accusations of sexual grooming and harassment.

The jury in Suffolk County Superior Court unanimously rejected the counterclaims filed by his accuser, Dr Kristin Knouse, fully clearing Sabatini of allegations that he had abused his position of power or committed retaliatory actions.

Consensual Relationship vs Misconduct Allegations

Sabatini, once considered a top contender for a Nobel Prize for his groundbreaking research into cell growth and metabolism, saw his life unravel when Knouse accused him of coercing her into a sexual relationship during her time as a junior colleague.

Following internal investigations by MIT, the Whitehead Institute, and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Sabatini lost his tenured position, lab access, and prestigious affiliations.

Throughout the proceedings, Sabatini maintained that their relationship was entirely consensual and had ended amicably. During the trial, his defence highlighted evidence showing the accuser joking about “hetoo” in private communications, presenting the narrative that the allegations were driven by professional rivalry and personal animosity rather than workplace coercion.

He established a new laboratory at the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry in Prague, funded through philanthropic support, including backing from hedge fund manager Bill Ackman.

    High-Court Appeal and Legal Precedent

Speaking after the verdict, Sabatini described the experience as a multi-year nightmare that destroyed his normal life, expressing hope that the ruling would begin restoring his scientific reputation.

Attorneys representing Knouse expressed deep disappointment with the jury’s decision and announced plans to appeal, maintaining that the verdict highlights the ongoing challenges women face when confronting powerful figures in academia.

The $6 million judgment stands as one of the most prominent legal reversals of a high-profile academic misconduct case in recent years.
