Chinese President Xi Jinping invoked several defining moments in the history of US-China engagement- from George Washington’s interest in Chinese porcelain to the two countries’ cooperation during World War II and Richard Nixon’s historic 1972 visit to China- as he called for a new chapter in ties with the United States.
Speaking at a state dinner hosted by US President Donald Trump at the White House, Xi Jinping drew on nearly 250 years of American history to highlight periods of exchange and cooperation between the two countries.
“Like a river that never stops flowing, history never stands still,” Xi Jinping said, before urging Washington and Beijing to build on their past interactions and work together in the future.
George Washington And His Chinese Porcelain
Xi Jinping began his historical references by pointing to America’s first president, George Washington, and his interest in Chinese porcelain. The reference was to the long history of commercial and cultural exchanges between the United States and China, dating back to the early years of the American republic.
US And Chinese Forces Fought Japan Together
Xi Jinping then turned to World War II, when Chinese and American forces fought against Japan. He described the cooperation between the two sides during the war as a “friendship forged in blood and fire”, highlighting a period when the two countries were aligned against a common adversary.
Nixon’s 1972 China Visit And Mao Handshake
Xi Jinping also recalled former US President Richard Nixon’s landmark visit to China in 1972. Nixon’s meeting with Chinese leader Mao Zedong became a defining moment in US-China relations and paved the way for the eventual normalisation of diplomatic ties between Washington and Beijing. The historic handshake between Nixon and Mao came after years of hostility between the two countries and marked a major shift in their relationship.
‘Let Us Write A New Chapter’, Xi Tells Trump
After recounting those moments, Xi Jinping turned to the future of US-China relations.
“Like a river that never stops flowing, history never stands still,” he said, calling on the two countries to build on their history of engagement.
“Together let us nurture the beautiful flowers of Sino-US friendship. Together let us write a new chapter in our friendly relations,” Xi Jinping said.
