Malcolm Brogdon, who was named the best newcomer of the year in 2017, shocked fans of the sport as he decided to retire a week ahead of the upcoming season.

Malcolm Brogdon retired on Wednesday after a nine-year NBA career during which he earned awards for being the league’s top rookie and best reserve.
The veteran point guard had spent the preseason with the New York Knicks, where he was expected to serve as the backup to All-Star Jalen Brunson. However, a week before the season began, he decided to retire.
“I am deeply grateful to have reached this point on my own terms and now to be able to enjoy the benefits of my career with my family and friends,” Brogdon said in a statement.
“Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to all who have been part of my journey,” he added.
The 32-year-old Brogdon was a second-round pick by the Milwaukee Bucks in 2016. He won the NBA’s Rookie of the Year award in 2017.
He also went on to enjoy stints with Indiana Paces, Boston Celtic, Portland Trial Blazers, and Washington Wizards.
Brogdon received the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year award in the 2022-23 season while playing for the Celtics. He averaged 15.3 points over 463 games.
He was also named the 2023 reserve of the year with a Sixth Man Of The Year award, in addition to making the All Rookie first team in the year he received his Rookie of the year award.
