Fitness test of old vehicles has now become 10 times more expensive. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has increased the test fees for Vehicle Fitness Certificate in the country. These changes have been implemented under the Central Motor Vehicle Rules (Fifth Amendment).

Under the new rule, now you will have to pay Rs 15,000 for fitness certificate for 20 year old cars, Rs 2,000 for bikes and Rs 25,000 for heavy commercial vehicles. Apart from this, fitness certificate for vehicles will have to be obtained after 10 years, which was earlier mandatory for 15 older vehicles.

Now instead of 15, fitness test certificate will have to be made for the vehicle within 10 years.

Now there are 3 categories for fitness according to age

In the new system, vehicles have been divided into 3 different categories according to age. 10 to 15 years, 15 to 20 years and more than 20 years old vehicles. That is, as the age of the vehicle increases, the cost of fitness test will also increase.

The biggest impact has been on commercial vehicles older than 20 years, because the fees on them have increased by 10 times. The ministry says that these changes were necessary to maintain the safety and environmental standards of old vehicles.

Why increased the fees for fitness test?

The Ministry has said that vehicles continue to run on the road even after their design life, hence they should be tested properly. The new fees will bring good facilities at the automated testing centers and testing will be strict.

It is necessary to have a fitness certificate to drive vehicles in India. It is illegal to drive a vehicle without a fitness certificate. The work of issuing fitness certificates for commercial vehicles is done by the State Transport Department. Fitness certificate shows that your vehicle is as per the emission standards.
