Switzerland last reached the quarter-finals when they hosted the World Cup in 1954.

Switzerland faced Colombia in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 match on Tuesday (July 7) and defeated them 4-3 in the penalty shootout to book their place in the quarterfinals. Davinson Sánchez and Cucho Hernández missed the second and fourth penalties, respectively, for the South American side, while Manuel Akanji was the only Swiss player to miss from the spot.
The victory over Colombia was a historic one for Switzerland as it ended their 72-year wait for a place in the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals.

In the quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cup 2026, Switzerland will face Lionel Messi’s Argentina at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City on Saturday (Sunday IST). The match is scheduled to start at 6:30 AM IST, and the winner will face the winner of the Norway vs England quarterfinal in the semifinals of this year’s tournament.

Switzerland were part of Group B in the FIFA World Cup 2026, and they topped the group with seven points from three matches. They kicked off their campaign with a surprising 1-1 draw against Qatar at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara on June 13 but bounced back with a commanding 4-1 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood on June 18.
In their final group-stage match, Switzerland defeated co-hosts Canada 2-1 at BC Place in Vancouver.

Switzerland’s Round of 32 match was scheduled against Algeria at BC Place in Vancouver on July 2, and they kept a clean sheet to register a 2-0 victory.
In the Round of 16 match against Colombia as well, they did not concede a goal during the 90 minutes of regulation time or the 30 minutes of extra time.
