Germany faced Paraguay in their Round of 32 match of the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup on Monday (June 29) at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough and suffered a shocking 4-3 defeat in the penalty shootout after the scores remained level at 1-1 following extra time.
The loss to Paraguay marked Germany’s first-ever defeat in a FIFA World Cup penalty shootout.

Arsenal star Kai Havertz and Newcastle United’s Nick Woltemade saw their spot-kicks saved by Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill, while Bayern Munich defender Jonathan Tah missed the decisive penalty in sudden death by firing his effort over the crossbar.

The victory over Germany was also Paraguay’s second win in a penalty shootout at the FIFA World Cup. Their previous shootout triumph came against Japan in the Round of 16 of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
The defeat on Monday marked another premature exit for Germany who were playing in their first knockout-stage appearance since winning the 2014 World Cup.
Paraguay, on the other hand, celebrated arguably their greatest win at the tournament, but they face the daunting prospect of running into an in-form France next should Les Bleus beat Sweden.

Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill produced two stunning saves in the penalty shootout to help Paraguay secure a memorable victory over Germany the Round of 32 match.
Gill is a 26-year-old goalkeeper who represents Paraguay in international football and plays for San Lorenzo de Almagro at club level. He has made 10 appearances for Paraguay so far, and in his 10th international match, he helped his side secure a memorable FIFA World Cup knockout victory.
