CNN-News18 has exclusively accessed files from independent forensic audits and high-level submissions before the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT). These documents outline an extensive pattern of financial distress and administrative manipulation spanning several years.
The accessed records paint a grim picture of the club’s financial health, with the Annual Audit Reports presented during past Annual General Meetings (AGMs) highlighting sharp operational deficits under previous administrations. Specifically, during the financial years 2021 and 2022, the premier institution reported a collective operational and management loss exceeding Rs 26.5 crore.
The Baker Tilly Audit: A Staggering Rs 269 Crore Deficit
The true scale of the fiscal bleeding, however, is detailed in a separate, exhaustive financial review conducted by the prominent accounting firm Baker Tilly. Spanning the period from 2017 to 2022, the independent forensic probe uncovered a staggering cumulative loss of Rs 269 crores over that five-year window.
This independent forensic report later became the subject of intense legal friction and bitter boardroom backbiting. A formal perjury complaint was subsequently lodged with the NCLT, explicitly alleging that the critical document had been actively tampered with by vested interests to intentionally conceal damning structural realities and shield key actors from systemic accountability.
Systemic Failures: The ‘Ghost Member’ Billing Nexus
Beyond the sheer volume of missing capital, the forensic reports submitted directly to the tribunal point to severe irregularities in how the club’s prestigious membership ledger and daily billing structures were maintained. According to the forensic evidence, these unchecked billing practices created an environment where unauthorised individuals—other than verified permanent members—were actively accessing the premises, enjoying exclusive club benefits, and utilising its premium infrastructure. This “ghost member” arrangement not only diluted the club’s strict security protocols but also leaked massive amounts of unrecorded hospitality revenue.
The escalating disclosures regarding these internal audits eventually paved the way for intense central government scrutiny under the provisions of the Companies Act. This structural breakdown ultimately triggered extensive corporate governance and oversight battles before both the NCLT and the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT), permanently altering the administrative landscape of India’s most powerful social hub.
