After 16 thrilling Round of 32 matches that saw heavyweights like Germany and the Netherlands crash out of the FIFA World Cup 2026 following penalty shootout defeats, the focus now shifts to the Round of 16. 16 teams will compete in eight Round of 16 matches over the next four days, with a place in the quarterfinals at stake.

The Cristiano Ronaldo-led side secured a comeback win over Croatia on Thursday (Friday IST) in Toronto to book their place in the Round of 16, while 2010 champions Spain thrashed Austria 3-0 in their opening knockout match of this year’s tournament.
Apart from Spain and Portugal, the clash between Brazil and Norway on Sunday (Monday IST) also promises to be a fascinating contest.

The winners of the eight Round of 16 matches will progress to the four quarterfinals, while the losing teams will be eliminated from the tournament.
The winners of the first two Round of 16 matches—Canada vs Morocco and Paraguay vs France—will face each other in the first quarterfinal, while the second quarterfinal will feature the winners of the Portugal vs Spain and USA vs Belgium Round of 16 matches.
In the third quarterfinal, the winner of the Brazil vs Norway match will take on the winner of the Mexico vs England clash at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens on July 11.
