England continue their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign on Tuesday when they take on Ghana in a crucial Group L encounter at Gillette Stadium.

Both sides opened their tournaments with victories and know that another three points would significantly strengthen their chances of reaching the knockout rounds.

The Three Lions produced one of the most entertaining performances of Matchday 1, defeating Croatia 4-2 in Arlington. Thomas Tuchel’s side dazzled going forward, with Harry Kane scoring twice and Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford also finding the net. While England’s attacking display earned widespread praise, the defensive unit showed signs of vulnerability, allowing Croatia back into the contest on more than one occasion.

Even so, the result leaves England in a strong position to take control of Group L, with Tuchel’s men aiming to win their opening two World Cup matches for only the fifth time in the nation’s history.

Ghana, meanwhile, began their campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Panama. Caleb Yirenkyi struck deep into stoppage time to secure all three points and give Carlos Queiroz’s side a dream start to the tournament.

The Black Stars may no longer carry the underdog aura that took them to the World Cup quarter-finals in 2010, but they remain a dangerous side capable of causing problems for any opponent. Queiroz will be particularly motivated to improve on his last World Cup meeting with England, having seen his Iran side suffer a 6-2 defeat against Gareth Southgate’s team in Qatar.

Probable Starting XIs

England: Pickford; Reece James, Stones, Guehi, O’Reilly; Anderson, Rice; Madueke, Bellingham, Gordon; Kane.

Ghana: Benjamin Asare; Senaya, Adjetey, Opoku, Mensah; Yirenky, Party; Fattah, Solomon, Semen; Jordan Ayew.

England Carry Momentum into Group L Clash

England arrive in excellent form, having won three consecutive matches. Tuchel has enviable depth at his disposal, with players such as Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford and Morgan Rogers available to change games from the bench.

The Three Lions’ attacking quality was evident against Croatia, particularly after halftime when they overwhelmed their opponents with pace, movement and creativity. Kane, Bellingham and Rashford all looked sharp, while England’s midfield controlled large portions of the contest.

Ghana also enter the match with renewed confidence after ending a difficult run of form. Their victory over Panama snapped a six-match winless streak and provided a timely boost ahead of arguably their toughest group-stage fixture.

However, England remain overwhelming favourites. The significant gap in the FIFA rankings, combined with the depth of Tuchel’s squad and their recent attacking form, suggests the Europeans have the tools to secure another important victory.

That said, Ghana will take encouragement from England’s defensive struggles against Croatia. With experienced Premier League performers such as Jordan Ayew and Antoine Semenyo in attack, the Black Stars will believe they can find opportunities if England leave space at the back.
