Inter Miami appointed Cristian “Kily” Gonzalez as new head coach. He replaces interim manager Guillermo Hoyos.

Inter Miami have announced they have reached an agreement with Cristian “Kily” Gonzalez to join them as their new head coach on Thursday. Gonzalez, a native of Rosario – the hometown of Inter Miami captain and superstar Lionel Messi – takes charge with the club looking to arrest a disappointing run of form since the league’s post-World Cup break.
“Inter Miami CF announced today that it has reached an agreement with Cristian Alberto ‘Kily’ Gonzalez to become the Club’s new First Team head coach,” said a club statement.
Until Gonzalez secures his US work permit, Guillermo Hoyos will continue in the role on an interim basis, the club said.
The 52-year-old Gonzalez brings extensive playing experience from Europe and the international stage. A left winger during his career, he represented Inter Milan, Valencia and Zaragoza, while earning 56 caps for Argentina between 1995-2005.
Gonzalez began his coaching career in 2020 and subsequently managed three Argentine clubs before making the move to Miami.
His appointment comes as the MLS Cup holders attempt to recover from a difficult stretch. Miami have struggled since the league’s mid-season World Cup break, even after strengthening their star-studded squad with the addition of Brazil international Casemiro from Manchester United.
Miami have won just one of their last five matches under Hoyos, losing the other four. The results have left them second in the Eastern Conference but 10 points behind leaders Nashville.
Hoyos’ difficult spell was compounded on Thursday when he was handed a one-game suspension and a fine following multiple violations of MLS rules governing late kick-offs. Miami have repeatedly been slow to return to the field following half-time.
A longtime friend of Messi and previously the club’s sporting director, Hoyos took over as interim manager in April following Javier Mascherano’s departure for “personal reasons.”
The club also paid tribute to Hoyos for stepping into the role during a turbulent period.
“Inter Miami would like to especially highlight and thank Hoyos for his commitment and full dedication to the Club, demonstrated by his willingness to assume the role during this period, which began last April,” said the club statement.
