The Ministry of External Affairs has called it a big achievement for India. The ministry says that this appointment will further strengthen India’s strict policy against terrorism and its efforts to stop the funding of terrorists globally.
Vivek Aggarwal, a 1994 batch IAS officer of Madhya Pradesh cadre, is currently the Secretary in the Ministry of Culture. He has more than three decades of experience in administrative service. Before this, he had also held the responsibility of Additional Secretary in the Revenue Department of the Finance Ministry.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the election of Vivek Aggarwal is an indication that India’s role in global financial security and action against illicit money is continuously strengthening. FATF sets such rules and standards for the countries of the world, the purpose of which is to prevent money laundering and terrorism funding.
Aggarwal has represented India in FATF
Vivek Aggarwal has previously led India’s delegation to FATF. He has also been the Director of Financial Intelligence Unit-India (FIU-IND). During this time he worked on cases related to economic crimes, money laundering and financial intelligence.
Sign of India’s growing credibility
The Culture Ministry said that getting this responsibility in FATF is a proof of India’s growing credibility among more than 200 countries and regions of the world. According to the ministry, India’s role in making global rules related to digital payments, virtual assets and new financial risks is also increasing.
FATF had condemned the Pahalgam attack
In June 2025, FATF had condemned the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir and appealed to all countries to stop funding of terrorism.
