The Border Security Force (BSF) has rejected claims by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) that two key suspects in the murder of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi fled to India through the Meghalaya border.
On Sunday, the DMP said the suspects crossed into India through the Haluaghat border area of Bangladesh and later travelled to Tura in Meghalaya. The claim was reported in Bangladeshi media, quoting an additional commissioner of the Dhaka police.
However, the BSF said no such incident had taken place. He stated that there had been no illegal cross-border movement in the Meghalaya sector and that no arrests or interceptions had been made. It described the reports as false, fabricated and misleading.
Inspector General OP Upadhyay, head of the BSF in Meghalaya, said there was no evidence to support the claims. He added that Meghalaya Police had also denied reports that the suspects were arrested after entering India. He pointed out contradictions in statements made by Bangladeshi officials and questioned the credibility of the reports.
Upadhyay said it was highly unlikely that the suspects could travel nearly 300 km from Dhaka and cross into India without being detected, given Bangladesh’s CCTV coverage and checkpoints.
“The BGB is a highly professional force. The claim that the individuals entered India from a location nearly 300 km from Dhaka, despite extensive CCTV surveillance and checkpoints in Bangladesh, is highly implausible. Therefore, the allegations are highly unlikely, totally false and fabricated,” the IG said.
Sharif Osman Hadi was linked to the anti-Sheikh Hasina platform Inqilab Moncho. He was also campaigning as an independent candidate from the Dhaka-8 constituency ahead of the February elections.
Inqilab Moncho gained attention during last year’s July uprising, which later led to Sheikh Hasina being removed from power.
