Arsenal’s fledgling and uncertain hopes for a long-awaited English Premier League title received a massive boost on Monday, after title challengers Manchester City drew 3-3 with Everton and dropped points, helping Arsenal strengthen their position at the top.
The result means Manchester City now trail Arsenal by five points with a match in hand.
It has been a captivating title race over the past two months, with Arsenal extending their lead at the top to nine points as of Saturday, March 14, after a 2-0 victory over Everton.
But a run of disappointing results last month saw Arsenal relinquish their lead, permitting Manchester City, who won three straight league games in that period, to draw level.
Arsenal, meanwhile, made the most of playing two extra games before Manchester City, stretching their lead to six points and piling pressure on their rivals. With the title race swinging back in Mikel Arteta’s team’s favour, City were left scrambling for a late draw against Everton at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
While Pep Guardiola’s team still has a match in hand, the advantage now lies with Arsenal heading into the final stretch of the season. The north London club have played 35 games and sit on 76 points, while Manchester City have 71 points from 34 matches.
With three and four league matches left, the maximum points totals the two teams can reach are 85 and 83. That means Arsenal will bag the title if they win all their remaining games, ensuring at least a two-point cushion even if Manchester City claim wins in all of theirs.
This leaves Arsenal needing at least seven points from a possible nine. But there is a caveat: Mikel Arteta’s team would have to rely on a superior goal difference if both sides end up level on points.
