Riyad Mahrez has retired from international football after Algeria’s World Cup campaign ended with a 2-0 loss to Switzerland in the round of 32 on Thursday.
The five-time Premier League champion reflected on his time with the national team after the match.
“There were good times and difficult times as well, of course. That’s part of a career,” he said afterward. “But representing Algeria has been a dream of mine ever since I was young, to play for my country. It’s been an immense honor and a great source of pride.”
He added: “It is the new generation’s turn to play.”
After the final whistle, Mahrez acknowledged supporters by giving a thumbs-up before patting his heart and waving as he left the field.
The Al-Ahli forward brings to a close an accomplished international career. The 35-year-old finishes with 119 appearances for Algeria, the second-most in the nation’s history, and 40 goals, also the second-highest total. He was a member of the Algeria squad that won the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
At club level, Mahrez claimed one Premier League title with Leicester City and four more with Manchester City. He also won the Champions League with Manchester City.
