Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey is expected to deny two new allegations of rape, a London court heard on Friday.
The 32-year-old footballer was not present at the hearing at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, where preliminary proceedings in the case were addressed.
Partey had been formally excused from attending, while his lawyer, Emma Fenn, told the court that the Ghana international intends to plead not guilty to both charges.
Details Of Latest Charges
According to reports from BBCPartey was charged last month with two counts of rape relating to a woman he allegedly met on a date in December 2020.
Prosecutor Arabella MacDonald told the court the complainant came forward after other allegations involving the player had already become public.
“The complainant came forward after news of Mr Partey’s other matters were widely publicised,” MacDonald said.
The court granted Partey bail, with the condition that he must not contact the alleged victim.
Previous Allegations
The new charges come after the former Arsenal midfielder was previously charged last year with five counts of rape involving two women and one count of sexual assault involving a third complainant.
Those alleged offences are said to have taken place between 2021 and 2022, during Partey’s time at Arsenal, following an investigation by the Metropolitan Police.
Partey was formally charged four days after leaving Arsenal, when his contract with the club expired at the end of June.
Partey’s Career So Far
The Ghana international joined Arsenal from Atletico Madrid in 2020 in a transfer worth about £45 million.
During four seasons in north London, he made 167 appearances and scored nine goals, including four during his final campaign.
On the international stage, Partey has earned more than 50 caps for Ghana, representing the country at multiple Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Further court proceedings in the case are expected later this year.
