David Moyes has questioned the Premier League over the difference in the punishments for Chelsea and Everton for breaking the league’s rules. He said Everton fans deserved an exact explanation for why Everton were docked eight points for Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) breaches during the 2023-24 season, when Chelsea could simply escape with a £10.75 million (approx ₹131 crore) fine and a suspended transfer ban.
Everton were initially handed a ten-point deduction, which was later reduced to six points after an appeal. Shortly after, they received an additional two-point deduction for a second financial breach. In contrast, Chelsea were convicted of undisclosed payments by third parties to players, unregistered agents, and others between 2011 and 2018. However, the league concluded these would not have led to PSR breaches.
“I think they have to explain exactly what has happened here. If they don’t then we are never going to understand their reasoning [as to] why. This is me not being anything against Chelsea. Absolutely not,” Moyes said before Saturday’s game at Hill Dickinson Stadium against Chelsea.
“I’m just saying that no matter what happens here, everybody would like to know. Everton supporters, for the pain they had to go through when they had a huge points deduction, and other clubs as well. Those points deductions may well have been correct, I don’t know, but we need to see what is the difference? What would you rather have, a £10million fine or a ten-point deduction? The money you get for your league place now, that might cover it. It would be good if we could get more of an explanation. How much is the £10million fine having an effect, really?” he added.
The Toffees are currently eighth in the league with 43 points, only five points behind Chelsea, making them rivals for the same spots in Europe.
