Norwegian GM Magnus Carlsen added yet another feather to his cap with his triumph at the inaugural edition of the ESports World Cup 2025 on Saturday.
The 34-year-old edged out Alireza Firouzja in the final of the event in Saudi Arabia to clinch the prize money of $250,000. Carlsen got the better of Indian Nihal Sarin, American Hikaru Nakamura, and then Alireza Firouzja en route to the new title.
The quarterfinals of the tournament comprised four rapid games played in a 10+0 time control format before the intensity ramped up in the semi-finals, featuring six games per match, culminating in a high-stakes Grand Final contested in a best-of-six sets format.
Carlsen, representing Team Liquid, posted a 2-0 triumph to seal the crown in Riyadh as he posted a 3-1 triumph against Firouzja in the opening set of the championship clash, before replicating the same in the second set of the title bout.
“I was overall in better shape today so I felt that I was going to get chances and of course it all turned out perfectly,” the Norwegian legend said following the triumph.
Carlsen opened the day with a win over his opponent in the first set of the final, before the duo played out a couple of draws to split the points. But, Carlsen closed out set 1 with a 3-1 triumph as he clinched the fourth game of the sequence.
Firouzja looked to turn the tables around in the second set as he triumphed in the first game of set 2, but the Norwegian proved too strong on the day as he swept the subsequent three games to register a resounding triumph and seal the deal.
Nakamura edged out GM Arjun Erigaisi in the playoff to decide the third-place on the day as well as the American registered a 3.5-2.5 triumph over the Indian.
