EPFO Restores Portal: The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has rolled out a revamped Unified Member Portal after a scheduled system upgrade, bringing several changes to the way members access key provident fund services.

The updated portal is designed to offer a faster, more secure and reliable experience. However, some of the most commonly used services, including UAN activation and new UAN generation, are no longer available on the EPFO website. Instead, these services have been moved to the government’s UMANG app and now require Aadhaar-based Face Authentication.

If you are an EPF member, here’s a detailed look at what has changed and how you can access various services.

EPFO Unified Member Portal: What’s New?

Following the upgrade, the EPFO has redesigned its Unified Member Portal and redistributed certain member services. While many PF-related services continue to remain available on the portal, UAN-related onboarding services have been shifted to the UMANG app. The move is aimed at strengthening identity verification through Aadhaar-based Face Authentication while making member services more secure.

UAN Activation Now Available Only Through UMANG App

One of the biggest changes is that members can no longer activate their Universal Account Number (UAN) through the EPFO Unified Member Portal. To activate a UAN, members must:

  • Download and open the UMANG app.
  • Navigate to EPFO Services.
  • Select ‘UAN Services Through Face Auth’.
  • Choose ‘UAN Activation’.
  • Complete Aadhaar-based Face Authentication and follow the on-screen instructions.

Once the verification is completed successfully, the UAN gets activated.

Can Existing PF Members Without a UAN Still Get One?

Yes. If you already have an EPF account but were never allotted a UAN, you can still obtain one through the UMANG app. During the process, members need to:

  • Verify their registered mobile number.
  • Enter the required member details.
  • Complete Aadhaar-based Face Authentication.
  • Link the newly generated UAN with the existing PF account.

This ensures that existing EPF balances remain connected to the new UAN.

How to Retrieve Your UAN

The upgraded portal has also simplified the UAN retrieval process. If you have forgotten your UAN, you can retrieve it by:

  • Entering your registered mobile number.
  • Uploading the required identity or address proof.
  • Verifying the OTP sent to your registered mobile number.

After successful verification, the UAN can be retrieved through the updated system.

Death Claim Facility Continues on EPFO Portal

While several UAN-related services have shifted to UMANG, the facility for filing death claims remains available on the EPFO Unified Member Portal. Beneficiaries should keep the following ready before submitting a claim:

  • Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
  • Bank account proof, such as a cancelled cheque or passbook.
  • Death certificate of the EPF member.
  • Proof of the beneficiary’s date of birth, wherever applicable.

EPFO has also specified that:

  • Only PDF documents are accepted.
  • Each file must not exceed 2 MB.
  • File names should not contain spaces.

What Is the UMANG App?

UMANG (Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance) is the Government of India’s digital platform that provides access to a wide range of central and state government services through a single mobile application.

With the latest EPFO update, the app has become the primary platform for UAN activation and new UAN generation using Aadhaar-based Face Authentication, reducing the need for members to visit an EPFO office for these services.

What This Means for EPF Members

The latest changes do not affect existing UANs or PF balances. Instead, they change the platform through which members complete certain onboarding services. Members who need to activate a UAN or generate a new one will now have to use the UMANG app, while other services, including death claim filing, continue to be available on the EPFO Unified Member Portal.

As EPFO continues to modernise its digital infrastructure, members should ensure that their Aadhaar details, registered mobile number and KYC information remain updated to access services without interruption.
