England’s World Cup quarter-final against Norway promises far more than a battle between two teams. Saturday’s clash is packed with fascinating individual matchups that could ultimately determine who books a place in the semi-finals.
From Erling Haaland’s relentless goalscoring streak to Martin Odegaard’s midfield artistry, here are the five duels that could shape the contest.
Erling Haaland vs Marc Guehi
Containing Haaland remains football’s toughest assignment.
The Norway striker has already scored seven goals at the 2026 World Cup, joining Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe in a three-way race for the Golden Boot. His international numbers are equally staggering — 62 goals in just 54 senior appearances, with only six coming from penalties.
Even more remarkably, Haaland has scored in each of his last 14 competitive internationals, netting 27 goals during that run.
Marc Guehi, who knows Haaland well from their Premier League battles, will lead England’s defensive effort. The Crystal Palace defender must stay alert throughout, because against Haaland, one lapse is often all it takes.
Andreas Schjelderup vs Ezri Konsa

Kristoffer Ajer vs Harry Kane
Harry Kane arrives full of confidence after scoring in England’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Mexico.
The captain now has six goals at the tournament and remains England’s biggest attacking weapon.
Brentford defender Kristoffer Ajer will likely take responsibility for containing him, but Kane’s tendency to drop deep, create space and link play makes him one of the hardest forwards to mark.
Julian Ryerson vs Anthony Gordon
