Starlink in India: Tech giant and SpaceX founder Elon Musk has pitched Starlink’s satellite internet service for India, saying it could help provide internet access to the “least served” people, particularly in rural areas.
“Starlink would help the least served in India, especially in rural areas,” Musk said in a post on X, while responding to a post highlighting gaps in India’s internet coverage.
The post shared by a netizen @DogeDesigner cited connectivity gaps to underline the point, noting that 11,256 of India’s listed villages still had no 4G coverage as of May 2026.
According to the figures cited in the post, India had 1.093 billion internet subscriptions as of March 2026, of which 440.87 million were in rural areas. Rural internet subscription density stood at 48.31 per 100 people, compared with 126.80 in urban areas.

The post said satellite connectivity could help bridge gaps in areas affected by difficult terrain, low commercial viability and infrastructure challenges. It could potentially provide connectivity to remote villages, mountainous regions, islands and areas affected by disasters.
Starlink Awaiting Approvals In India
Starlink, operated by Musk’s SpaceX, provides internet connectivity through a constellation of low-Earth orbit satellites and has been seeking regulatory approvals to launch commercial services in India.
The company has made a fresh application to offer satellite communication services in the country, according to reports. An earlier application for its Gen 2 satellite network was rejected by the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) over concerns that some features and proposed radio frequencies did not meet Indian requirements.
The Gen 2 system includes direct-to-device connectivity capabilities.
Starlink Says Talks With Government Continue
Starlink is seeking approvals as the Indian government works on the regulatory framework for satellite spectrum allocation and satellite communication services.
In a separate development, Starlink Business Operations Vice President Lauren Dreyer said the company remained in active discussions with the Indian government over the launch of its commercial services.
China’s SpaceSail Raises $1 Billion
Meanwhile, Elon Musk’s Starlink is also facing growing competition from China’s satellite internet sector.
Chinese startup SpaceSail, officially known as Shanghai Spacecom Satellite Technology, has raised around 7 billion yuan (about $1 billion) in a Series B funding round to accelerate the development of its low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellite network, according to South China Morning Post.
The company operates China’s Qianfan constellation, which is being developed as a rival to Starlink’s satellite internet network. The funding round, completed on Monday, attracted 18 investors, including state-backed Shanghai Alliance Investment and venture fund CAS Star.
