The United States is preparing for a historic milestone—the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in July—but a new commemorative release has stolen the spotlight from the festivities. The White House has confirmed that the US will release a limited number of passports featuring a portrait of President Donald Trump, surrounded by the text of the Declaration of Independence and his signature embossed in gold.

First reported by Fox News, the “patriotic passport” is part of a wider “Freedom250″ rollout that includes events like the UFC250 Fight and the Great American State Fair. While the administration views it as a “renewal of national pride,” the international community and social media users have some very different interpretations.

The “Brochure” Jibe From Iran

In a turn of diplomatic commentary, the Iran Embassy in Mumbai took to X (formerly Twitter) to deliver a biting critique. Using a mix of English and Hindi, the embassy’s post quickly went viral for its candid tone. “So now US passports might feature Donald Trump’s image inside? Finally, a document where the ego arrives before the traveler. Bhai yeh passport nahi, pura self-promotion brochure lag raha hai 😂”

Another popular popular take suggested that the design might be an intentional strategy by the US government to lower the number of people seeking American citizenship. “I think there is a deeper layer to this. This might be a CIA and US government strategy to reduce immigrant citizenship requests. Think about it, obviously no one would want that passport now. What a master stroke,” one user theorised.

One user commented, “Thank god mine is good until 2032 😂😂😂.” Many users also pointed out that even in countries with long-standing traditions of leadership worship, the passport usually remains a neutral space.

“There are 43 Monarchies in the world today… None of them feature the image of their Kings or Queens on the passport. In fact, none of the 195 countries carry the images of their leaders on passports,” noted a commentator.

For those who do want a piece of history, the White House confirmed to the BBC that the design will be available to “any American citizen” who applies once the rollout begins. However, there is a catch: they will only be available at the Washington Passport Agency and will remain in circulation only as long as supplies last.
