Japan’s Meteorological Agency has warned that tsunami waves of up to one metre are possible and has urged residents to keep away from coastal areas.

A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Japan on Sunday evening, prompting a tsunami advisory for Iwate Prefecture, authorities said.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), waves of up to one metre are possible, and residents have been urged to stay away from coastal areas as a precaution. t

The agency also mentioned that the quake took place at nearly 5:03 PM (local time) in the waters off Iwate, addiung that tsunami could approach the coast “at any moment”.

Japan’s national broadcaster NHK reported that offshore tsunami waves had already been observed and urged residents to stay away from coastal areas. Live television footage, however, showed relatively calm seas as officials continued to monitor the situation.

Meanwhile, India’s National Center for Seismology (NCS) measured the earthquake at a magnitude of 6.6, occurring at a depth of 30 kilometres. It placed the epicentre at 39.51° N latitude and 143.38° E longitude in the North Pacific Ocean.

Authorities are closely watching the region for further seismic activity, though no immediate reports of major damage or injuries have been received.
