A man working with the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (BESCOM) on contract died by suicide in Karnataka’s Kelagere village after reportedly being harassed by someone pretending to be a CBI officer.
In a handwritten note, he said he was being blackmailed and forced to send money by a man named Vikram Goswami, who claimed to be from the Central Bureau of Investigation.
Kumar wrote that the man threatened him with arrest and asked him to pay Rs 1.95 lakh. Out of fear, Kumar sent the money.
But the calls continued, and he was told to transfer more money to various accounts. In total, he paid Rs 11 lakh, reported NDTV.
“I am ending my life because of this harassment and ill health,” Kumar wrote in the note, which he also asked not to be ignored. The victim was found hanging from a tree.
Kumar included the mobile numbers of those who allegedly harassed him.
Police at MK Doddi station in Channapatna are now investigating the case and checking the suicide note and bank transactions.
Officers said Kumar’s phone is locked, which has made the investigation more difficult.
