The Air Force has given production clearance to the Defense Research Development Organization (DRDO) and Bharat Dynamics Limited to make 200 new Astra Mark-1 missiles. This 110 km range air-to-air missile has been in use by the Air Force for a long time. It can be fired through Sukhoi-30 and Tejas fighter jets.
News agency ANI reported that the Defense Ministry had approved this Rs 2900 crore project in 2022-23. Air Force Deputy Chief Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit recently visited DRDO’s development lab in Hyderabad. During this time, production clearance of these missiles has been given.

This is a beyond visual range missile
- The Defense Ministry said that Astra MK-1 is a Beyond Visual Range Air to Air Missile. This means that this missile can attack with utmost precision even where the pilot of a fighter jet or attack helicopter cannot see.
- Its weight is 154 kg, length is 3.84 meters and width is 178 MM. Along with this, it is technically and economically better than other missiles.
- Such missiles provide stand off range to our fighter jets. Stand off range means firing a missile towards the enemy and then moving away to avoid its attack.
- In the coming time, there are plans to install it in Dassault Mirage 2000, Tejas and MiG aircraft as well. The Navy will also assemble the missile in its MiG 29K fighter aircraft.
- This missile can be fired at different heights. No specific range is required to fire it.
Trial of Astra Mark-2 missile will also be conducted soon
The Indian Air Force is also going to test the Astra MK-2 missile soon. It will be an upgraded version of Astra Mark-1. This missile also falls in the Beyond Visual Range category. An order of 200 missiles of Astra Mark-2 may also be placed soon. It has an optical proximity fuse, which is not there in Astra Mark-1.
The missile is able to keep an accurate track of the target with the help of optical proximity fuse. No matter how far the target is, this missile explodes on hitting it. Its weight is 154 kilograms and its length is 12.6 feet. Its range is 130 to 160 kilometers. It reaches a maximum height of 66 thousand feet.
