Indian equity markets extended their winning streak to a fifth consecutive session on Wednesday in the Diwali 2026 week, with benchmark indices ending higher after recovering sharply from intraday lows. Broad-based buying in metal, realty, media, consumer durables and select financial stocks supported the rally, while sustained selling in IT shares capped some gains.

Experts said the US midterm outcome improved global sentiment, raising expectations of a more measured approach to trade and tariff policies and potentially supporting FII flows into emerging markets.

The Sensex surged 383.55 points, or 0.50%, to settle at 77,301.40. The 30-share index had touched an intraday low of 76,604.85 before staging a strong recovery of nearly 697 points. It also touched a day’s high of 77,396.04.

The Nifty advanced 149.75 points, or 0.63%, to close at 23,960.60. The index recovered 264.45 points from its intraday low of 23,696.15 and finished near its day’s high of 23,960.60.

The recovery came after a volatile trading session. Both benchmarks had initially extended their gains but slipped into negative territory during the morning amid profit-booking. However, buying interest returned in the second half of the session, helping the indices regain momentum.

The latest gains extended the market’s winning streak to five sessions. On Tuesday, the Sensex had jumped 1,225.07 points, or 1.62%, while the Nifty rallied 370.05 points, or 1.58%. The earlier rally was supported by a correction in crude oil prices from recent highs and renewed foreign fund inflows.

The broader market significantly outperformed the frontline indices, reflecting strong buying interest in midcap and smallcap stocks.

The Nifty Smallcap 100 surged 2%, while the Nifty Midcap 100 gained 1.55%. The Nifty Smallcap 50 advanced 2.03%, and the Nifty Smallcap 250 rose 1.97%.

The Nifty Midcap 150 climbed 1.60%, while the Nifty 500 advanced 1.11%. The Nifty Next 50 also gained 1.68%.

The broader market’s outperformance indicated that the recovery was not limited to a handful of heavyweight stocks.

Among sectoral indices, the Nifty Media index emerged as the top performer, surging 5.15%. The Nifty Realty index gained 2.85%, while the Nifty Metal index advanced 2.80%.

The Nifty Consumer Durables index climbed 2.04%, while Nifty FMCG rose 1.50%. Nifty Chemicals, Nifty Oil & Gas and Nifty Auto also ended higher.

However, IT stocks remained under pressure. The Nifty IT index declined 1.50%, emerging as the only major sectoral laggard among the key indices.

Among Sensex constituents, Bharat Electronics (BEL) led the gains, rising 4.56%. Titan advanced 4.28%, while InterGlobe Aviation (IndiGo) gained 2.39%. Bajaj Finance, ITC, Adani Ports and Bajaj Finserv were also among the notable gainers.

On the losing side, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) declined 2.70%, followed by HCL Technologies, which fell 2.23%. Infosys slipped 1.65%, while Eternal and Kotak Mahindra Bank also ended lower.

India VIX, the market’s fear gauge, declined 2.89% to 15.27, indicating a moderation in expected market volatility.

The decline in volatility, coupled with strong gains in broader market indices, reflected improved risk appetite among investors during the session.

Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments, said, “‘Diwali fireworks’ continued on Dalal Street, with mid- and small-caps extending their outperformance as risk appetite strengthened. The US midterm outcome improved global sentiment, raising expectations of a more measured approach to trade and tariff policies and potentially supporting FII flows into emerging markets. Domestically, optimism around possible tax relief maybe in the upcoming Union Budget, better-than-expected quarterly earnings and resilient festive consumption added momentum to the rally.”

He added that improving earnings visibility and healthy domestic demand should keep the near-term bias constructive, although geopolitical risks and crude oil volatility could trigger intermittent profit booking.
