A woman’s half-burnt corpse was recovered from her house in Jharkhand’s Dhanbad, with gaps and contradictions in her two brothers’ statements leaving police and locals baffled.
The woman’s worm-infested body remained inside the house for five days after her death, which reportedly occurred on April 8. Eventually, her elder brother performed her last rites in the bathroom using a pillow, quilt, and blanket.
The incident came to light when neighbours in the residential colony in Vastu Vihar complained of a strong foul smell emanating from the house, making it difficult for them to stay. They then informed the police.
Upon receiving the information, Govindpur police reached the spot and recovered a half-burnt body from the bathroom.
The house belonged to retired Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research (CIMFR) scientist Sangeet Kumar, who died in 2023.
His divorced daughter, Lipika, had been suffering from depression for a long time and lived alone. Gradually, other family members also became socially withdrawn and distanced themselves from people.
Govindpur police station in-charge Vishnu Kumar Raut said that a burnt body was found in the bathroom. The body has been sent for post-mortem, and more details will be known after the report. Police are continuing their investigation.
According to the elder brother Pranav, his sister died on April 8. Pranav said that she had been repeatedly going to the bathroom, her condition worsened, and she eventually died.
He informed his younger brother Prabuddha Rajvardhan, but he did not come, and no one took it seriously. Pranav said worms had infested the body, so he performed the last rites.
Interestingly, Pranav said that his younger brother entered the house while he was burning the body in the bathroom. However, the younger brother denied having seen the body.
On the contrary, the younger brother, Prabuddha, who is also reportedly suffering from depression, said that Pranav had informed him about their sister’s death, and he arrived on Sunday morning with materials for the funeral.
However, upon reaching, his elder brother told him, “We have already performed the last rites.”
At that time, there was no foul smell coming from the house, he added.
Pranav maintained that his younger brother, Pradyut Rajyavardhan, had seen the body. It is at this point that Pradyut contradicts his brother, saying he never saw it.
The police are currently probing the incident based on the brothers’ statements, and further light will be shed as the investigation progresses.
