Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) record-breaking victory in the Falta Assembly constituency of West Bengal on Sunday, calling it a victory of democracy and the defeat of intimidation.

BJP candidate Debangshu Panda won the Falta Assembly constituency with more than 1 lakh votes, marking a landslide victory in the Trinamool Congress fortress. The TMC suffered a crushing defeat, with candidate Jahangir Khan slipping to fourth position after announcing his withdrawal from the race.

“People of Falta have spoken! Democracy has won and intimidation has lost. Congratulations to Shri Debangshu Panda Ji for winning in Falta by a record margin. It indicates the unwavering faith of the people of West Bengal towards the BJP,” PM Modi said on X.

The Prime Minister also remarked that the result showed the faith bestowed by the people in West Bengal to the new government, and complimented all BJP workers for their outstanding work.

Debangshu Panda’s Historic Win In Falta

Panda defeated his nearest rival, CPM’s Sambhu Nath Kurmi, by over 1 lakh votes. Panda polled 149,666 votes, while Kurmi managed only 40,605 votes in his favour. TMC’s Jahangir Khan had opted out of the race after the BJP came to power in West Bengal by winning 207 out of the 294 seats.

The victory is significant as Falta had long been a Trinamool Congress stronghold, located in Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee’s Diamond Harbour stronghold. The seat had been with the Trinamool since 2011.

The Election Commission ordered repolling in all 285 booths in the constituency after allegations of tampering with the voting machines and electoral irregularities during the Phase 2 voting on April 29. A turnout of over 87% (of the total 2.36 lakh voters) was recorded during the repolling on Thursday.

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari congratulated Panda on his victory with an overwhelming mandate and lashed out at the TMC by winning the last 2021 election by intimidating voters.

“A party devoid of principles and ideology, which had transformed itself into a mafia enterprise, has now been exposed in its skeletal form after losing power. By misusing state machinery, looting public wealth, extorting the hard-earned money of ordinary people, and fostering a culture of syndicates and threats, the leaders of this party had begun to believe they were above everything,” he remarked.
