A 31-year-old software engineer was allegedly beaten to death by his wife’s family following a matrimonial dispute in outer Delhi’s Nihal Vihar on Friday, police said.

The deceased, Vinay Gupta, lived in Laxmi Park and worked in the IT sector. He earned an annual package of around Rs 60 lakh.

He had married Rekha, a resident of Budh Vihar, about three-and-a-half years ago. The couple has four-month-old twins, a boy and a girl.

According to Vinay’s mother, an argument broke out between the couple over administering medicine to one of their children. Rekha allegedly became angry after Vinay raised his voice during the argument and left the house.

Around 10 minutes later, she returned with six people, including her two brothers, sister-in-law, father and uncle, the family alleged.

The group allegedly assaulted Vinay despite him bringing water for them. His family alleged that the attackers strangled him and repeatedly hit his chest with their hands and feet, causing his death.

Vinay’s parents were present during the alleged assault and tried to intervene, according to the family.

Family Alleges Assault Was Premeditated

Vinay’s family has alleged that the attack was planned. They also claimed that Rekha had switched off the CCTV cameras before the assault.

The family said Vinay and Rekha had been living on a separate portion of the third floor, with Rekha cooking meals separately. They also alleged that Rekha frequently argued with her mother-in-law over domestic issues.

According to Vinay’s family, even minor disputes between the couple would sometimes lead to threats from Rekha’s brother against Vinay.

Police have arrested four people in connection with the case, including Rekha and her two brothers. A case is being registered under Sections 103(1) (murder) and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS).

Police Probe Circumstances Surrounding Death

Investigators are probing the events that led to the confrontation and the circumstances surrounding Vinay’s death. Police are also questioning the arrested accused to establish the role allegedly played by each person in the assault.

The investigation is also examining the family’s allegations that the CCTV cameras were switched off before the incident and whether the assault was premeditated.
