Delhi Police on Sunday released a video showing officers informing Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke about the death of his grandmother while he was in detention in the national capital.
The police said Dipke was told about the death and the timing of the funeral and was offered help to travel to his hometown in Maharashtra to attend the last rites. Deputy Commissioner of Police Neha Yadav said officers also offered assistance with flights, phone calls and other arrangements.
According to Yadav, the officers approached Dipke soon after receiving information about his grandmother’s death and repeatedly asked whether he wanted to speak to his parents. She said he declined the assistance offered by the police.
“As soon as the Delhi Police received information about the passing away of Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) Founder Abhijeet Dipke’s grandmother, officers approached him to convey this sad news and offered all possible assistance. They sensitively asked if he needed help with flights, phone calls, or anything else. They repeatedly asked if he wished to speak to his parents, but he declined,” Yadav said.
Police Response To Dipke’s Mother’s Allegations
The Delhi Police released the video after Dipke’s mother, Anita Dipke, accused the force of giving false information about whether her son had been told about the death. She said the family had been unable to establish contact with him and had delayed the last rites while waiting for him to return.
The police, however, maintained that Dipke had been informed about his grandmother’s death as well as the scheduled funeral. It said he was also offered assistance to travel home on humanitarian grounds.
Dipke’s paternal grandmother, Savitribai Shankarrao Dipke, 85, died at her home in Santuk Pimpri village in Maharashtra’s Hingoli district at around 11.30 am on Saturday. She had reportedly been suffering from age-related health problems and a prolonged illness. Her last rites were scheduled for 10 am on Sunday.

Why Was Abhijeet Dipke Detained?
Dipke, along with CJP co-convenor Saurav Das and party leader Ashutosh Ranka, was detained on October 10 after arriving in Delhi from Mumbai. The three were travelling to the capital for the party’s proposed protest at Jantar Mantar, where CJP planned to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
DCP Yadav said the proposed sit-in at Janpath had not been granted permission because the organisers had allegedly failed to follow prescribed procedures. She also cited the group’s previous conduct and the prevailing security and law-and-order situation.
According to the police, restrictions under Section 133 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) were also in force in several areas.
Yadav alleged that CJP had previously failed to comply with undertakings and local directives and claimed that an earlier gathering had involved stone-pelting, arson and violence, resulting in damage to public property.
“Permission for the proposed sit-in protest at Janpath was denied due to the failure to follow prescribed procedures, a history of non-compliance with laws and guidelines, and the prevailing security and law-and-order situation,” she said.
The three CJP leaders were subsequently released after being produced before an executive magistrate.
