The engagement ceremony of a young couple was going on at Jain Sports Club in Chandni Chowk, Delhi on Monday evening. People were dancing to the tunes of the DJ and the couple was exchanging rings. Meanwhile, a massive explosion occurred a few hundred meters away near the Red Fort.
People did not understand the explosion
According to the local people and the security guard of the club, initially everyone thought the explosion to be the sound of a transformer or a gas cylinder exploding. The security guard said that he was on duty till 6 pm and no one tried to go out and find out the situation.
Traders and neighbors also remained confused
Nearby businessmen Suresh and Ravindra told that even after the blast the celebrations continued for some time. Clocks and other items kept in many shops fell due to the sound and shock. The local people first came to know that it was a blast when a youth ran in and told that it could have been a bomb blast due to the explosion of the car.
Then later panic and stampede
Sunil, a rickshaw puller on the road, said that after the blast, people started getting into his rickshaws out of fear. People quickly ran towards the metro station. He said that the situation seemed to be completely chaotic for a few minutes.
In this high-intensity blast, a slow moving car exploded. Many vehicles were damaged and many people were injured. Many seriously injured people later died, taking the death toll to 10.
Describing the horror of the incident, people and businessmen affected by the blast say that initially no one could understand that it was a bomb. This sudden explosive incident created chaos in the entire area.
