C-Section Complication Leaves 19-Year-Old Critical, Family Alleges Gloves, Napkins Found Inside (Representative photo)
A 19-year-old new mother is fighting for her life after what her family alleges was a shocking lapse during a C-section at Maharashtra’s Beed District Hospital. Days after being discharged, she developed severe abdominal pain, with her family later claiming that surgical gloves and paper napkins were found inside her abdomen.
Sandhya Suraj Gaikwad was admitted to the Beed district hospital on August 1 for delivery and underwent a C-section. She was discharged four days later. However, after returning home, she developed severe abdominal pain, following which her family took her to a private hospital.
Doctors there reportedly detected an “unknown object” inside her abdomen. As her condition worsened, the family took her to Pune for further treatment.
Emergency Surgery At Sassoon Hospital
Her mother said Sandhya had been vomiting after the C-section and that she had informed a nurse at the Beed civil hospital. She said Sandhya was later discharged, but her condition deteriorated after she returned home.
The family first took her to a private hospital but said they were informed that treatment could involve significant expenses. They then travelled to Pune. According to the family, another hospital did not admit Sandhya because of the seriousness of her condition, after which she was taken to Sassoon Hospital.
Sandhya remains in serious condition and is undergoing treatment there. Her mother said her daughter is so weak that she does not have the strength to hold her newborn.
Family Alleges Medical Negligence
Sandhya’s husband, Suraj Gaikwad, has alleged negligence during the first surgery and demanded strict action against those responsible.
“My wife’s painful condition has happened only because of the doctors’ negligence. Strictest action should be taken against the doctors responsible,” Suraj said.
The family filed a complaint with the district hospital administration on Tuesday over the alleged incident.
Probe Ordered, Notices Issued
The allegations have prompted the district administration to take cognisance of the matter. Show-cause notices have been issued to the woman doctor concerned and other health workers involved in the surgical procedure.
Beed District Surgeon Dr Satishkumar Solanke said the matter was being investigated. He said strict legal and administrative action would be taken if anyone was found responsible.
The investigation will determine the circumstances in which the surgical material was found inside Sandhya’s abdomen following her C-section.
