Premier League side Crystal Palace were demoted to the UEFA Europa Conference League from the UEFA Europa League due to a breach of multi-club ownership rules, the governing body announced on Saturday.
Palace qualified for the UEL for the first time in their history following their maiden FA Cup. But Lyon owner John Textor also holds a stake in the London club. The French club has been permitted to hold their UEL spot due to a higher finish in their most recent domestic league campaign.

Lyon finished the latest Ligue 1 campaign in 6th place, while Palace could only come in 12th in the English top-flight.
American Textor agreed to sell his 43 per cent stake at the Eagles to New York Jets owner Robert ‘Woody’ Johnson. However, the deal is yet to be completed and was made after UEFA’s deadline of March 1 for multi-club conflicts to be resolved.
Palace are expected to appeal the decision, while the club Chairman, Steve Parish expressed the club’s disappointment following the decision.
“We are obviously devastated, most importantly for the supporters. Supporters of all clubs should be devastated for it,” Parish said.
“It is a bad day for football,” he added.
“Most right-minded football fans will see what a terrible injustice this is for the football club and one that I hope someone can remedy because I do believe that nobody in football wants to see this – I don’t think UEFA want to see it,” the 59-year-old added.

Lyon, who were relegated to the second-tier of French football due to their financial irregularities, won an appeal against the same after Textor agreed to step aside from the day-to-day operations of the side.
