The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has taken over the security of Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, with Z-category security now in place. This comes a day after she was attacked during a ‘Jan Sunwai’ programme at her camp office in Civil Lines on Wednesday morning.
According to sources, the process of transition from the Delhi Police to the CRPF was underway and was expected to be completed within the next few hours.
Once the arrangement is finalised, the Delhi Police will continue to manage the outer perimeter of the Chief Minister’s residence, while the CRPF will directly handle her personal and area-specific security.
Officials confirmed that area-specific security arrangements have been designed to ensure round-the-clock protection for Rekha Gupta.
The CRPF currently provides security to several high-profile leaders in India, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah and members of the Gandhi family, who are also under Z or Z-plus security categories.
The Chief Minister’s security was reviewed hours after she was attacked at her camp office in Civil Lines on Wednesday morning.
Reacting to the incident, the Chief Minister had later termed the assault part of a “well-planned conspiracy to kill her“.
The accused, Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakriyaa 41-year-old resident of Rajkot (Gujarat), was arrested and was being interrogated.
News agency PTI quoted PWD Minister Parvesh Verma as saying that the Chief Minister sustained injuries to her hand, shoulder and head.
As the investigations progressed, the police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the accused under attempt to murder charges in connection with the attack.
He was also booked for allegedly assaulting and obstructing a public servant from discharging his duty.
Khimjibhai came to Delhi two days ago and stayed in North Delhi’s Civil Lines, it was known.
Sources said the accused arrived at the Chief Minister’s Office at nearly 7.30 am on Wednesday.
One of his relatives has been lodged in the Tihar Jailand he was carrying court-related documents related to the same. The accused wanted his relative to be released from jail, it was known.
Meanwhile, the mother of the accused alleged that his son travelled to the national capital to speak to the Chief Minister over the issue of stray dogs, adding that the accused is an animal lover.
She also alleged that the accused suffered mental issues and had attacked his family members on multiple occasions.
