Expressing profound shock and outrage, Trinamool Congress (TMC) chairperson Mamata Banerjee on Saturday launched a scathing attack on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, labelling the violent assault on TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee in Sonarpur as an act of absolute brutality. Speaking directly to the media from the hospital courtyard, a visibly shaken Mamata revealed the harrowing details of the physical trauma endured by the Member of Parliament, stating that the sheer force of the stone-pelting could have resulted in his instant death on the spot had local residents not intervened to provide him with a protective helmet.
Abhishek Banerjee was shifted to Belle Vue Hospital in Kolkata after the attack during his Sonarpur visit to meet victims of post-poll violence. Abhishek and Mamata earlier left Apollo Hospital in the city. Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya said that his party was not involved in the attack. He further suggested that public anger against the TMC could be the reason behind the incident.
Mamata Banerjee also raised serious concerns regarding the medical handling and administrative delays immediately following the attack, questioning why the MP was kept inside the Intensive Therapy Unit (ITU) for over two hours before being moved. Disgusted by the institutional response, the former West Bengal chief minister announced her decision to discharge the MP and transfer his medical care directly to her residence, where a makeshift hospital setup will be established to oversee his recovery.
According to her statement, attending doctors confirmed that the MP has suffered multiple injury marks across his body, with a highly concerning accumulation of clotted blood near his chest. While initial medical evaluations strongly suggested keeping him under intensive monitoring in the ITU for further diagnostic tests and saline administration, Mamata expressed deep dissatisfaction with the hospital’s operational capacity under pressure.
The former CM alleged that the medical facility itself was functioning under active external intimidation and threats, preventing the healthcare staff from executing their duties seamlessly. Drawing sharp historical parallels to attack her political rivals, she claimed that even during the 34-year-long tenure of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) regime, the state had never witnessed such a low point of political malice and physical targeted violence.
The unfolding crisis has triggered a massive war of words between the ruling TMC and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with top opposition leaders across the country condemning the breakdown of law enforcement. As Banerjee vowed to personally supervise the medical recovery from her home, the incident has left the state administration scrambling to handle the fallout of what the TMC terms a pre-planned, murderous conspiracy.
