With police deployed at SPPU and prohibitory orders in place, authorities are ready. Whether Pune’s legendary traffic cooperates is the real question, one X user suggests.

Cockroach Janta Party’s protest is scheduled at the Ambedkar Statue on the SPPU campus between 4pm and 6pm.
Satirist Abhijeet Dipke’s Cockroach Janta Party will hold its second protest at Savitribai Phule Pune University at 4pm on Wednesday, with inventor-activist Sonam Wangchuk joining the demonstration demanding Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation. No traffic advisory has been issued, but Pune residents are already asking questions.
The protest, scheduled at the Ambedkar Statue on the SPPU campus between 4pm and 6pm, has received permission from both the university and Pune Police. With prohibitory orders in place across Pune City Police jurisdiction until June 22, organisers have been asked to maintain law and order and conduct a peaceful demonstration. Given Pune’s notoriously congested roads, commuters heading through the university area on Wednesday evening may want to plan ahead.
What Is The Cockroach Janta Party And Why Is It Protesting?
The satirical political page was formed after Chief Justice of India Surya Kant referred to unemployed youth who become media professionals, activists and RTI workers as cockroaches.
The CJP held its first protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on June 6, drawing massive support on social media. Wednesday’s Pune protest demands the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the NEET-UG paper leak and CBSE evaluation issues.
What Did Dipke Say At The Press Conference?
Speaking at Patrakar Bhavan in Pune, Dipke made a direct appeal to parents, according to the Indian Express. “I want to appeal to all parents. I know you must be feeling scared when your children speak on politics or ask questions to the government,” he said, adding that someone has to speak up. He also said the Pune protest could be bigger than the one in Delhi.
Who Is Joining The Protest?
Inventor and activist Sonam Wangchuk will be joining the demonstration at SPPU, the CJP has announced.
Has Permission Been Granted?
Yes. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 4) Chilumula Rajnikanth confirmed that permission has been granted for the gathering on the university campus from 4pm to 6pm, with conditions on maintaining law and order. SPPU Registrar Prafulla Pawar also confirmed the university has granted permission subject to conditions to prevent any untoward incident. Police deployment will be in place at the protest site.
Will The Protest Affect Pune Traffic?
No official traffic advisory has been issued. However, Pune residents need little excuse to flag the city’s chronic congestion, and Wednesday’s protest near the university drew immediate reactions on social media.
| Congestion hotspot | Reported issue |
|---|---|
| Radha Chowk | Marked as a 24-hour traffic jam point by residents |
| Keshavnagar | 500-metre commute taking close to an hour |
| Dolphin Chowk to Kasat Nagar | Worst congestion 7pm–8pm at 13.6 km/h |
| Pune Railway Station bus stop | Footpath encroachment, double and triple parking |
One X user, @SadhuG_Giani, put it bluntly: “The only question is whether Pune’s legendary traffic or the government’s lathis will arrive first.”
