A Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) volunteer and his father were allegedly attacked by a mob for highlighting the poor infrastructure of a government school in West Bengal’s Bankura on Thursday, after which the father succumbed to his injuries.

Shaik Abdul Hafeez, 25, and his father Janab Mafik were allegedly attacked after he visited a government school to assess it as part of the CJP’s “School Thik Karo” campaign. Mafik succumbed to severe head injuries on Saturday, according to a statement from the CJP.

The CJP alleged that armed individuals identified as local BJP workers forcibly entered Hafeez’s residence and demanded that he record a video apologising for highlighting the condition of the school. “When Hafeez refused to comply, the individuals allegedly launched a violent assault on his family,” it said.

The victim’s wife, Hasina Begum, filed a formal complaint at the Indus Police Station demanding capital punishment for the perpetrators. At least eight accused persons have been arrested, including local BJP booth president Astam Majhi and BJP convener Abani Majhi.

“We will not be silenced and intimidated. We will keep fighting for better schools. CJP stands firmly with Abdul and his family. We demand the immediate arrest of those responsible for his father’s death. Our CJP team will visit West Bengal and ensure that Abdul and his family get justice,” said CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke.

Bengal CM Denies BJP’s Role, Police Rule Out Political Motive

Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari denied that the BJP was involved in the attack and promised that action would be taken as per law.

“There is no BJP connection here. They are all criminals. Action will be taken according to law,” Adhikari told reporters at the state secretariat Nabanna. Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar said any allegation of assault should be investigated by the police and action taken if the charges are established.

The eight accused were produced before a sub-divisional court and charged under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including murder, attempted murder, brutal assault, rioting, and property damage.

However, Additional Superintendent of Police Krishanu Roy stated that initial findings show no political connection to the murder, adding that police will take the accused into custody to investigate the underlying motive.

Meanwhile, a CJP National Working Committee delegation, led by co-convener Ashutosh Ranka, will visit West Bengal to stand in solidarity with Hafeez and his family and to demand justice and accountability.
