After criticizing the police action against the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) protesters, former Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai has made it clear that his comments should not be seen as support for this organization. He said that CJP’s agenda is different and his agenda is different. However, he also stressed that in a democracy every political party has the right to protest. Along with raising questions on the Central Government, Annamalai also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said that he will not shy away from raising questions on things he finds wrong.
Speaking at a program of her ‘We the Leaders’ movement on Thursday, Annamalai said that she does not need to take sermons on patriotism from anyone. He said that he has lived and worked in many states of the country. He understands the unity and sovereignty of India.
Annamalai said that if the CJP protesters have done any wrong, then action should be taken against them as per law and due procedure. He said that if the sovereignty of the country is threatened, then intelligence agencies should be used and action should be taken against the culprits. An atmosphere of fear should not be created just by making allegations on social media.
Praise for Modi, but questions on the government too
Annamalai praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said that he is a good Prime Minister and is doing good work. However, he added that supporting the Prime Minister does not mean that everything the government says is considered correct. He will raise questions on whatever he considers wrong.
He also said that attempts to weaken people’s trust in democratic institutions like the Election Commission and the Supreme Court cannot be accepted. In this way, while supporting CJP’s right to protest, he also talked about maintaining faith in democratic institutions.
Questions were raised on CJP’s performance earlier also
Annamalai had earlier described CJP’s strategy as a ‘step in the wrong direction’, but defended the organisation’s right to protest. He criticized the detention of CJP leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka and raised questions on the action of Delhi Police.

He had also mentioned a comment of the then Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi in 2011. According to Annamalai, at that time Modi had talked about going to Delhi to protest against the police action on anti-corruption protesters at Ramlila Maidan. Annamalai questioned that when the protest was considered justified at that time, then why are questions being raised about arrests and detentions for criticizing the current government.
BJP leaders also criticized
Annamalai also raised the question whether BJP was unknowingly giving free publicity to CJP. He mentioned the burning of cockroach effigies during Dussehra at a Ramlila in Delhi, which was organized under the leadership of BJP MLA Ashok Goyal. According to him, despite being in power for 12 years, BJP is adopting such an attitude towards its opponents, which can give them more recognition.
On Annamalai’s comments Tamil Nadu BJP spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathi criticized. He said Annamalai’s words blurred the line between peaceful protest and deliberate breaking of the law. He also said that Annamalai has left BJP in June 2026 and he has the freedom to criticize.
