West Bengal Police on Sunday arrested a civil volunteer with a local police, Susanta Roy, based on a complaint lodged against him by a woman doctor of state-run Bhatar State General Hospital in East Burdwan for allegedly misbehaving with her. In the complaint, the woman doctor alleged that the accused was drunk and misbehaved with her as she was on night duty at the state-run hospital. The accused allegedly warned the woman doctor that she would face the consequences similar to a trainee doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Doctors and nurses of the hospital held a protest in West Bengal’s Purba Bardhaman district on Saturday.
The police stated, “We have learned the accused went to Bhatar state-run hospital for treatment and threatened the lady doctor for being late to start his treatment. The lady accused the civic volunteer of threatening her, saying, “Did you see what happened at RG Kar Medical College Hospital?” It can happen to you too”.”
Speaking with the media, Dr. Subarna Goshwami stated, “Doctors across medical colleges nationwide, from Punjab to Manipur, have stopped working. Amid this, a drunken civic volunteer, Shushanta Roy, threatened a female doctor. The police must take swift action and arrest him. Authorities should take all necessary measures to ensure our safety. A police investigation could reveal why the civic volunteer acted this way.”
“A man came to the hospital last night and threatened our female medical officer. We have lodged a complaint with the police and demand that the accused be punished. The on-duty officer was threatened with reference to the RG Kar Medical College incident,” a woman doctor stated.
