Former Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Sanat Dey was allegedly pelted with eggs and stones and greeted with “chor chor” (thief-thief) slogans by a crowd outside a party office in West Bengal’s Naihati on Tuesday, prompting police and central security personnel to escort him from the area.
The incident comes in the aftermath of the West Bengal Assembly elections, which saw the TMC lose power in the state and triggered political realignments in several constituencies.
According to local sources, Dey had entered a TMC party office in Naihati and remained there for some time. He was reportedly carrying a few bags, leading to speculation among local residents that he had come to remove certain items from the office.
As news of his visit spread, a large number of people gathered outside the premises and surrounded the office. Police personnel and central forces were subsequently deployed to the spot to maintain order.
When Dey emerged from the office, members of the crowd allegedly hurled eggs and stones at him while raising slogans against the former legislator. Videos from the scene showed security personnel forming a protective cordon around him as they escorted him away.
No injuries were immediately reported.
The reasons behind the public anger remain unclear, though the incident has sparked fresh discussion about political tensions in the industrial town of Naihati, located in North 24 Parganas district.
Dey represented the Naihati Assembly constituency as a TMC legislator before the recent election. The constituency witnessed keen political activity during the Assembly polls, with local political equations continuing to evolve in the aftermath of the election results.
Police have not yet issued a detailed statement on the incident. Further details are awaited.
