After attending the opening day of the BRICS Summit and holding a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chinese President Xi Jinping skipped the gala dinner hosted by the prime minister for BRICS leaders and other dignitaries on Saturday.
The reason for Xi’s absence was not immediately clear, though a source suggested that the Chinese president had returned to his hotel to take rest, news agency PTI reported.
Another notable absentee was Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed, having left for home after attending the BRICS Summit earlier in the day.
Xi arrived in New Delhi on Saturday afternoon and attended the BRICS Summit. He also held a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Modi.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and other BRICS leaders attended the dinner, along with Union ministers and chief ministers of several states.
Among the Union ministers present were Amit Shah, Nirmala Sitharaman, Piyush Goyal, Ashwini Vaishnaw and Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
The dinner menu featured khandvi mille-feuille, khumb galouti, paneer lababdar, gucchi marmik, carrot-bean poriyal and millet pulao.
Desserts included Old Delhi fruit cream with jalebi and shahtoot phirni.
