In a move to uphold national security and the integrity of its armed forces, China has shut down several self-media accounts that were found to be disseminating misleading military content, exploiting their veteran status for personal gain, and distributing sensitive military materials. The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) announced these actions on October 15, stating that the involved accounts had caused serious social impact and violated the Measures for the Administration of Internet Military Information Dissemination.

Among the accounts shut down were “Your Squad Leader Lai” and “Gan Su Youth,” which posted videos of training and military exercises taken during their service. Others, such as “Jiujiu (Retired)” and “Xiaowenzi – Former Female Soldier,” used their veteran identity to attract followers and solicit tips and gifts by livestreaming in military uniforms. Additionally, accounts like “Xiaochuan Material Store” and “Qianghe Good Goods” were found to be selling or distributing sensitive military materials, including videos related to military operations and books restricted to internal military circulation.

Some accounts were also found to be distorting and misinterpreting official policies. For instance, “Future Leaders,” “Red Bank and Imperial Side,” and “Director Red Shield” spread misleading information about military academy recruitment, personnel transfers, and benefits, while charging fees for so-called consulting services. Others, such as “Grow Old with the Army” and “Sharp Pen Writer,” fabricated stories that defamed military marriages and relationships and disclosed details of training missions. Accounts like “I Like Petting Cats in the Park” and “Military Blossoms Competing for Beauty” used AI tools to create and circulate distorted images and videos that mocked or vilified the armed forces.

The CAC emphasised that these actions were taken in accordance with the law to protect the dignity of the military and maintain the integrity of online content related to national defense. The crackdown reflects China’s ongoing efforts to regulate cyberspace and ensure that online platforms are not used to undermine national security or spread harmful misinformation.
