The Chhattisgarh government has launched a digital portal that will allow students, employers and other institutions to verify degrees and academic records issued by private universities in the state, in a move aimed at addressing concerns over fake or irregular qualifications.
The portal, cgpurc.cgstate.gov.in, developed by the Chhattisgarh Private Universities Regulatory Commission (CGPURC), was launched by Governor Ramen Deka at Lok Bhavan. Academic records of all 21 private universities in Chhattisgarh have been made available on the platform.
The system is designed to provide a digital trail of a student’s academic journey, from admission to the issuance of a degree. This could help flag irregularities such as degrees that do not have a corresponding admission record or qualifications linked to backdated entries.
The portal will also provide information on individual courses offered by private universities, including their recognition and approval status. Students can use the information to check whether a university and the course they are considering are validly operating before taking admission.
The move comes amid wider concerns over the authenticity of academic qualifications and the need for easier verification of degrees by employers and educational institutions.
For employers, the portal is intended to reduce the need to contact universities individually to establish whether a candidate’s qualification is genuine. The digital records will allow them to verify the degree as well as the academic record associated with it.
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai said the digital records would provide students with accurate information while strengthening transparency and accountability in higher education.
The state is also planning closer scrutiny of academic activity at private universities. Courses with low enrolment, poor academic outcomes or complaints will be reviewed, with action to be taken where necessary.
The monitoring will look at factors including faculty availability, regularity of classes and examinations and whether courses have adequate academic activity.
The CGPURC portal also contains information on university fees, officials, committees and their members, as well as PhD research guides.
The digital database is intended to give students access to more information about private universities before they make admission decisions, while creating a central mechanism for verifying academic qualifications after graduation.
