2026 FIDE World Championship returns to Switzerland with reigning Indian champion D Gukesh set to take on challenger Javokhir Sindarov of Uzbekistan in a historic match. The international chess federation (FIDE) has confirmed the schedule, format, prize money and venue for the highly-anticipated contest, which will take place in Geneva from November 22 to December 12.

The Competitors
India’s D Gukesh will defend the world championship for the first time since winning the title in Singapore in 2024. Gukesh became the 18th World Champion after defeating Ding Liren 7.5-6.5, winning the 14th and final classical game. At 18, he became the youngest undisputed world champion in chess history. His route to the title included winning the 2024 FIDE Candidates Tournament. He also won individual and team gold medals at the 2024 Chess Olympiad.
On the other hand, Uzbekistan’s Javokhir Sindarov earned his place in the championship match by winning the 2026 FIDE Candidates Tournament in Cyprus. Sindarov secured first place with a round to spare, going unbeaten and finishing with 10 points from 14 games.
His Candidates victory came less than five months after he won the 2025 FIDE World Cup in Goa, becoming the youngest player to win the event.
Sindarov is also the first player from Uzbekistan to qualify for a match for the undisputed world championship.
The Age Milestone
Both Gukesh and Sindarov will be 20 when the match begins, making the 2026 contest the youngest World Championship match in history.
For Gukesh, it will be the first defence of the title he won in Singapore.
The Venue
The match will be played at the Fondation Martin Bodmer in Cologny, Geneva, Switzerland. The event marks the return of a World Championship match to Switzerland for the first time since the 2004 contest in Brissago.
Founded in 1971, the Fondation Martin Bodmer is a heritage library and museum dedicated to major works and documents from world literature and human history.
Its collection contains around 150,000 documents in nearly 120 languages. It includes hundreds of papyri, medieval manuscripts from the Western and Eastern traditions, autograph manuscripts and rare engravings. The Bibliotheca Bodmeriana has been listed on UNESCO’s Memory of the World register since 2015.
FIDE World Championship Match Schedule
The official programme begins on November 22 with Media Day and the Opening Ceremony.
The first classical game will be played on November 24.
The final scheduled classical game is set for December 11. If the match is tied after the classical games, the tiebreaks will be played on December 12.
The match therefore runs from November 22 through December 12, including the opening programme and any required tiebreaks.
Championship Format
The championship consists of a maximum of 14 classical games. The first player to reach 7.5 points wins the match and becomes world champion.
Time Control
- 120 minutes for the first 40 moves.
- 30 additional minutes for the remainder of the game.
- A 30-second increment from move 41.
Players cannot offer a draw before Black’s 40th move. Before that point, a draw can be claimed through the Chief Arbiter or Deputy Chief Arbiter only in cases of threefold repetition or stalemate.
What happens if it is 7-7?
If the players are tied 7-7 after the 14 classical games, the title will be decided through tiebreaks on December 12.
The tiebreak procedure starts with four games played at 15 minutes plus a 10-second increment per move. If the score remains level, the players move to two games at 10 minutes plus a five-second increment. If necessary, that is followed by two games at three minutes plus a two-second increment.
Should the tie continue, further three-minute games with a two-second increment will be played one at a time. The colours will be reversed after each drawn game, with play continuing until there is a decisive result.
The Prize Money
The total prize fund is USD 2.5 million (net of any applicable local taxes). Each player receives USD 200,000 for every game won, including a win by forfeit.
The remaining prize money is divided equally between the two players. If the match ends 7.5-6.5 after 13 decisive games, or 8-6 after all 14 games are decisive, the winner receives USD 1.3 million, while the runner-up receives USD 1.2 million.
The same USD 1.3 million to USD 1.2 million split applies when the match is decided in the tiebreaks.
