Chandrasekaran first joined the board of Tata Sons in October 2016.

The tenure of Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran has been extended till 2032. The board of Tata Sons Limited on Thursday approved the new tenure. It has also been decided to launch the company in the stock market.

Chandrasekaran is currently serving his second term, he was scheduled to retire in February 2027. Chandrasekaran resigned on 12 August 2026. This then led to differences of opinion with Noel Tata and a tussle in the trust.

N. The decision to extend Chandrasekaran’s tenure is yet to be approved at the annual general meeting, in which Tata Trusts holds a 66% stake. Trust board member Noel Tata is against the decision, while Venu Srinivasan has supported Chandrasekaran’s reappointment.

For the first time in the group, tenure extended even after retirement age.

For the first time in the Tata Group, a group executive will continue in office even after the fixed retirement age of 65 years. According to Tata Group policy, executives usually retire at the age of 65. However, they can remain on non-executive posts for up to 70 years.

Chandrasekaran is currently 63 years old. His new term will end in 2032, when he will be 70 years old. Chandrasekaran joined the board of Tata Sons for the first time in October 2016. He was made chairman in January 2017. He started his career as an intern in TCS in 1987.

Wrote on August 12 – I am resigning due to opposition from a member.

Chandrasekaran had resigned from the post on 12 August. During this time he had written an emotional post. He had said that, “My current tenure as Chairman of Tata Sons expires on 20 February 2027. Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust have unanimously passed a resolution recommending extension of my tenure for another 5 years.

This was noted by the Nomination and Remuneration Committee and Board of Tata Sons and recommended for further extension. Subsequently, the proposal was placed before the Tata Sons board on 24 February 2026.

However, this proposal could not move forward as one member of the board did not support it. Due to lack of unanimous support, I chose to postpone this decision. Six months have passed since that board meeting and till date no decision has been taken.

Tata Sons is a huge organization and many big strategic projects are at crucial junctures. Not only is it important to have a leader to lead the group after February 2027, but it is also important to have clarity on leadership for employees, investors, partners and other stakeholders.”
