The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested the Superintendent and Consultant of the CGST Department in a bribery case of Rs 1 crore. The accused have been identified as Superintendent Pankaj Kumar and Consultant Prasad Kumar Swamy.
Superintendent Pankaj Kumar had asked the complainant to pay a bribe of Rs 10 lakh to CGST consultant Prasad Kumar Swamy. CBI arrested both of them on Thursday while taking bribe. The information came to light on Friday.
According to CBI, the case is of New Panvel in Raigarh district of Maharashtra. Here a private real estate company is re-developing two buildings in Sector-17. These buildings also include 24 flats owned by CGST and Central Excise, Raigarh Commissionerate.
Both were sent to police custody for 2 days
CBI laid a trap on Thursday. The officer asked the complainant to give Rs 10 lakh to CGST consultant Prasad Kumar Swamy. During the action, CBI arrested both the accused. After their arrest, both were presented in the court on Friday. He was sent to CBI custody for 2 days.
Up to 7 years imprisonment under corruption law
Under the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018, a government servant who takes bribe can be jailed for 3 to 7 years and fined.
Giving bribe is also a crime. If found guilty, the punishment can be up to 7 years in jail, fine or both. However, if a person is forced to pay bribe and informs the authorities within 7 days, he can get legal protection.
Complaint can be made in ACB
If a government official asks for bribe in exchange for work, a complaint can be filed with the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) of CBI. For this, a written complaint can be made in the concerned CBI office or through the official helpline available. There is also an option for online complaint on the website of Central Vigilance Commission (CVC).

In the complaint, give information about the name of the officer, for what purpose the bribe was demanded, when and how much. If there are recordings of conversations, messages, emails or other related documents, keep them safe. This evidence can help in the investigation.
