Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund named Niko Kovac as the new head coach of the side on Thursday.
The 53-year-old Croatian returns to the German top flight after having managed Wolfsburg between 2022 and 2024. He also had spells with Bavarian giants Bayern Munich in the 2018-19 campaign and Eintracht Frankfurt between 2016 and 2018.
Dortmund shared an update on social media platform X, formerly Twitter, that read, “Welcome, Niko! Borussia Dortmund has appointed Niko Kovač as their new head coach. The 53-year-old, born in Berlin, has signed a contract with BVB until June 30, 2026, and will officially take charge next Sunday after the club’s Bundesliga match against Heidenheim.”

Kovac replaces recently sacked Dortmund icon Nuri Sahin, who was shown the exit door following sub-par showings in the Bundesliga as they stand eleventh in the table with 26 points from 19 outings this season.

Dortmund finished the group stage of the revamped UEFA Champions League 2024-25 season in 10th place with 15 points from their eight outings as they won five games and lost the other three. ‘Die Schwarzgelben’ will compete in the playoff to qualify for Round of 16 of the elite European tournament.

Kovac clinched the Bundesliga, DFB Pokal and the DFL Supercup with Bayern to add to his Pokal win at the helm of Frankfurt in the 2017-18 season.
