American airline company Spirit Airlines has completely closed its operations due to financial crisis and sudden surge in fuel prices. The company officially announced the suspension of all its operations on May 2, 2026.
CEO said- We had no money left
Spirit Airlines President and CEO Dave Davis said that the huge increase in fuel prices in the last few weeks has put the company at this juncture.
To keep the business running, millions of dollars of cash was needed, which the company did not have. He described it as a ‘sad end’ and said the airline, which had been offering low-cost air travel for 34 years, was now left with no option but to cease operations.

Three big reasons for the closure of the airline
1. The business model was disturbed due to the cost of crude oil.
The war between America and Iran had increased the problems of Spirit Airlines. Due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz in March, Brent crude oil has reached $ 120 per barrel.
After jet fuel became expensive, premium airlines compensated for it by increasing ticket prices, but budget airlines like Spirit did not have the scope to increase prices.
2. $500 million deal with Trump administration fails
The Trump administration was considering a bailout package of about ₹4,700 crore to save Spirit Airlines. Under the deal, the government would have taken a 90% stake in the airline.
However, large bondholders such as Citadel and Ares Management Corp. refused to accept the government’s terms. Because of this the deal failed and the airline had to be closed.
The deal with the Trump administration failed on Saturday morning and the airline was forced to shut down.
3. Loss of $2.5 billion since 2020
The condition of the company was bad for a long time. From 2020 till now, the company had suffered a loss of more than 2.5 billion dollars i.e. about Rs 24 thousand crores. Last year, the company had laid off about 4 thousand employees and closed 200 routes.

The airline has clarified that those who have paid by credit card will get the refund back in the same mode. However, travelers who booked using vouchers, credit or airline points will now have to be part of the bankruptcy court process. The company has clarified that ‘Free Spirit Points’ are no longer valid and their value has become zero.
